GYROTONIC® movements focus on increasing the functional ability of the spinal column. The three-dimensional and circular exercises are conducted on a weight and pulley designed apparatus that offers even and constant resistance in all planes of motion – in which no part of the body remains inactive. With synchronized breathing patterns and varying degrees of rhythm, the neuromuscular and cardiovascular systems are challenged. Because the GYROTONIC® method offers continuous freedom of movement in all planes of motion, one’s structural and functional capabilities are worked at an optimal level.

The GYROKINESIS® technique, the basis of the GYROTONIC® method, illustrates these concepts without the use of equipment. At one time called “yoga for dancers”, the GYROKINESIS® method is taught simply using a matand, a stool and one’s own body strength as resistance. This is a fluid system that mobilizes the spine through seven progressions of movement including arching, curling, side-bending, twisting, and spiraling in all directions. The goal of the GYROKINESIS® method is to open and release the spine and then progress to the other muscle and joint structures of the body. Throughout GYROKINESIS® instruction, one progresses from seated exercises to mat exercises and eventually to standing exercises. The body is fluidly worked in this three dimensional system developing strength, length, mobility, and coordination. This improves athletic performance and overall movement organization within the body.
Studio 7 offers GYROTONIC® instruction in pre-scheduled sessions.
